Fire Safety Recommendations

Scarsdale Fire Chief Christopher Mytych provided a set of important Home Heating Safety Reminders to residents at this week’s Village Board meeting. Read a summary of his comments below:

  • Heating equipment, fireplaces, and chimneys should be cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional to ensure proper function and venting.
  • Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters, or central heating equipment according to State and Village codes, and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Keep anything that can burn, including furniture, storage, children, and pets, at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.
  • Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended. Make sure it is completely out before going to bed or leaving the house.
  • Plug portable space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord.
  • Remember to turn portable space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Use dry and well-aged wood. Wet or green wood causes more smoke and contributes to soot buildup in the chimney.
  • Use a high-quality grate or fireplace andirons, which help protect the firebox floor.
  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy metal, wire mesh, or heat-resistant glass screen to block embers and sparks from entering the living space.

America 250/Scarsdale 325 Oral History Initiative

In celebration of our local history and in honor of Scarsdale's 325th anniversary, the Village is coordinating an Oral History Initiative. The project will feature video interviews from current and former Scarsdale residents discussing our Village's unique past. Community members are encouraged to nominate themselves or others who are current or former Scarsdale residents to participate in this Oral History project.

Participation entails appearing on video and sharing stories, information, and firsthand accounts of Scarsdale’s history. Participants may be interviewed by members of the Oral History Initiative Committee and will be required to sign a video release form prior to filming.

Nominations may be submitted using the online form linked here and are due by February 20. The Committee will review all nomination submissions, but cannot guarantee the number of submissions that will be selected.

We look forward to celebrating Scarsdale's history together!

America 250/Scarsdale 325 Flag Design Contest

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and the 325th anniversary of Scarsdale, the Village will be hosting a Flag Design Contest to mark the occasion. Residents of all ages are invited to create a unique design that celebrates these milestones and showcases our vibrant community. Flags should be representative of both our Village and our country, tying together local and national history. The winning design will be transformed into a physical flag that will be flown at Village Hall and other Village properties throughout 2026. Residents are encouraged to use their creativity and join us in commemorating these important anniversaries.

Entries must be received by March 20 at 5 p.m. Click here for complete details and here for the design submission form.

Please contact Assistant Village Manager Ruby Tower with any questions at rtower@scarsdale.gov.

PUBLIC SAFETY
Prescription Drug Lock-up or Disposal Can Save Lives

You can help prevent youth prescription drug misuse by locking up medication in your household, and by properly disposing of any drugs your family is no longer using. Please take any unwanted medications to the Scarsdale Police Department’s drug disposal unit, located at Police Headquarters (50 Tompkins Road) on the second floor, which can be accessed by elevator.

By participating in this program, residents will also feel at ease that their unwanted pills and medication—prescription and over-the-counter medication, medication samples, vitamins, and veterinary medications—don’t end up in a landfill or water supply.

Items not accepted include: narcotics, liquid medications, syringes, thermometers, IV bags, bloody or infectious waste, personal care products, hydrogen peroxide, empty containers, inhalers, hazardous medical waste and sharps.
