Village Mourns the Passing of Former Mayor Jean StoneThe Village of Scarsdale is deeply saddened by the passing of former Mayor Jean Lawson Stone, a beloved community leader, 1986 Scarsdale Bowl Award recipient, and 70-year Village resident. She passed away on October 12 at the age of 101. Elected in 1981 as Scarsdale’s first woman mayor, Stone broke new ground for women in local government. She was also the Village’s first woman Police Commissioner and the first to chair both the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals. Stone additionally served on the Finance, Personnel, Public Works, and Transportation Committees. Beyond her official roles, Stone was deeply engaged in civic life. She served as President of the Village Club, the Heathcote Association, and the Fox Meadow PTA, and chaired both the Public Affairs Committee of the Scarsdale Women’s Club and the Voter Service Committee of the Scarsdale League of Women Voters. The Village extends its sincere condolences to the Stone family and to all who were touched by her remarkable legacy of public service.

Public safety Scarsdale Action for Youth Shares Tips for a Safe HalloweenThe Village of Scarsdale is sharing this message from Scarsdale Action for Youth (SAY), which works to promote the health and safety of local teens: “Halloweekend” has become associated with underage drinking and drug use among some youth. With Halloween falling on a Friday, SAY encourages parents to: Talk with teens about their plans and the risks of alcohol and drug use. Supervise gatherings—under New York’s Social Host Law, homeowners can be held liable for underage drinking or drug use on their property. Keep communication open so teens know they can call for help without consequence.
SAY reminds families that underage drinking and drug use are not harmless “rites of passage.” Early alcohol use increases the risk of addiction and other serious problems later in life. For more tips, visit sayscarsdale.org/post/halloweekend.
